The Scale of the Universe

Gran Telescopio Canarias

4.1 × 101 m

One of the largest optical telescopes in the world, located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma in Spain, about 2,300 metres above sea level. It saw first light in 2007 and is used to study stars, distant galaxies and objects near black holes. It can detect objects a billion times fainter than those visible to the unaided human eye.
